Static caravan holidays are a great way for families to take holidays together and are often a cheaper alternative to hotels. A well fitted out luxury caravan really can be a home from home and make a great base from which to explore your chosen area. Speaking of areas Devon remains a favourite with many people and with good reason - with miles and miles of beautiful countryside, beaches and rocky coasts to explore - not to mention attractions, many historical interest points and generally the best weather in the British Isles.
Torquay is found in an area known as the English Riviera and has been a UK favourite ever since Victorian times. However, that isn`t to say the town is stuck in that Victorian past rather a great blend of modern convenience and respect to its history. There are 22 miles of coastline with 19 beaches, impressive cliffs, secluded coves and peaceful walks to explore.
There are many attractions in and around Torquay including the Babbacombe model village a meticulously laid out and lavishly detailed tiny replica village sure to be a hit with children and adults alike. Kents Cave is a spectacular natural cave, which is a short walk away from Meadfoot beach, records show that people have been investigating the caves since 1571, however archaeological evidence suggest both people and animals have been exploring the caves for many thousands of years.
Torquay is also famous for its ghostly sightings and there are a variety of haunted places to try and spot a spectre or two. Churston Court inn is said to be haunted by the ghost of a monk and Berry Pomeroy Castle is home to a white lady and a tragic story of a murdered baby, which can still be heard to cry and a distraught and guilty mother who can be seen looking drawn and wringing her hands.
Exeter is the principal city of Devon and is the county`s central base for commerce, education, religion, medicine and culture. It is here you can find the magnificent Exeter Cathedral, a beautiful building, which dominates the skyline and dates back to Norman times. Other places of historical interest to see are the Northernhay Gardens, which are thought to be the first public gardens built in the area and Rougemont Gardens, which are joined to Northernhay and were once a castle moat. Exeter Rougemont Castle stands above these two and was built by William the Conquerer in 1068.
There are plenty of events going on in the area every month of the year. Particular highlight include the Exeter Fringe Festival in June, Exeter Craft Festival in July, Beautiful Days, which is a camping and family festival in August and the Milling and Activities Day at the Cricklepit Mill. If you prefer not to take your own car then you could always arrange a cheap car rental to transport you around your chosen vanues. Throughout the year there is a regular monthly Farmers Market and a huge Car Boot sale to wander around too.
Both Torquay and Exeter have cinemas, theatres and clubs for those looking for a bit of nightlife. Shops and stalls, galleries and markets to explore and a cafe, restaurant, bar or pub to suit everyone`s taste.
